Create Handmade Tiles with Unique Texture and Glaze
Create handmade tiles that will add beauty to your home for years to come. Today we've got a new video tutorial that shows how you can create handmade ceramic tiles with unique texture and glazes.
The Method
To start, roll out a slab of clay. We used an iron rich Hazelnut Brown mid-range clay from Standard. We rolled out approximately a half a bag of clay at a time so that we could easily flip the tiles onto a drywall board. Our Original Series Bailey DRD with a 7' long table made rolling out slabs easy and quick. We reccommend starting with a slab that is approximately 1/2" thick because the clay will be compressed once texture is added.
After smoothing off the canvas texture, we added a grooved texture to the backside of the slab. Then we flip the clay use a Xiem Art Roller to add a decorative texture to the surface of the tiles. A stainless steel tile cutter is the ultimate tool in this project. It creates uniform tiles with the help of a plunger plate. Our design is to have hexagon tiles surrounding smaller diamond tiles.
Our tip for keeping tiles flat? Dry them slowly and in between two pieces of drywall boards. Adding painters tape around the edges of the drywall will help to keep the drywall material from spilling out of the boards themselves. Once the tiles are dry it's time to bisque and glaze of course.
Choosing a glaze that compliments the textured surface can be a difficult but rewarding decision. Our plan? Glaze all the hexagons in a warm white glaze and reserve the green color for the smaller diamonds. This is a great opportunity to customize your design to suit your own taste and add beauty to the space around you. As always, we'd love to see what you create so tag your work #MadewithaBailey on social media.
