Community
Thank you for joining us at the 2023 Midtown Arts District Celebration of the Arts Expo!
It was wonderful to see you, Kingston! The community kept the clay room full all day long, and adults and children alike experienced clay coil and tile decorating, as well as wheel throwing!
Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina
Anne & Jim Bailey's visit to the exhibit
Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts
From the very early years of its development Jim and I took an interest in Watershed in Newcastle, Maine. We have been “kiln gods”, giving donations in support residencies, for many of those years hoping to help build and strengthen our clay community. As part of our road trip to Maine last month we were able to not just visit Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts but to participate in their fabulous fundraiser: Salad Days.
Haystack Mountain School of Crafts
In the far reaches of Maine lies a jewel in the crown of summertime craft programs. Jim and I had known about Haystack Mountain School of Crafts for years but had never visited the campus. Almost eight hours from our Hudson Valley home we made our way across the State of Maine to Deer Island last month. We certainly were not disappointed.
Create Ceramic Animals
Today on the Bailey Blog we'll show you how to create ceramic animals! In this five minute video we'll demonstrate making an animal figurine from start to finish. You'll see how we do everything from forming the clay to applying glaze and firing in a test kiln. And, we'll be sharing our material choices with you so you can be ready to put this project to use with your class or at home! This project would be excellent for children or young adults. We hope you enjoy!
COVID-19 Relief & Resources
It’s spring but it’s hard to know what to do some days in these times of COVID-19. With social distancing and the complete disruption of our work and play schedules, some days are just plain difficult. Here in our local community, we have found ways to take care of each other and to make sure people at risk are getting what they need while confined to their houses. We've included links to resources.
Super Bowl 2020 Mystery Pot Maker, Cavan Gonzales
Born into a long lineage of accomplished, traditional pueblo potters in 1970, Cavan Gonzales has added his unique 21st-century interpretation. He has been a leader in the revival of San Idelfonso polychrome pottery. This technique involves the application of three or more layers of colored slip to create designs. Cavan's fine graphic arts skills have been applied to creating new designs inspired not only from the past but also the present by adding elements of technology such as solar energy.

Hudson Valley Pottery Tour 2018
The Hudson Valley is alive with art! Bailey Pottery has been in Kingston, NY since our beginning in 1976, and since then we have seen the ceramics and arts community continue to grow and flourish. In its second annual year, the Hudson Valley Pottery Tour contributes to this wonderful growth. The self-guided tour of six studios in Ulster County, New York allows visitors to see the high-quality of ceramics being produced in the region and interact with the makers that create them.
