Fresh Green Spring Dish: A Textured Pottery Project Using an MKM Roller & AMACO Celadon Glaze
Fresh Green Spring Dish: A Textured Slab Pottery Project for March
March is the moment when studios start craving fresh color, botanical texture, and spring-inspired ceramics. This simple slab-built dish captures that feeling with a bright green glaze and floral texture that feels right at home with the changing season.
In this project, we create a small oval textured dish using a GR Mold Form Wood Drape Mold, an MKM flower hand roller, and a vibrant Wasabi glaze from the AMACO Celadon line.
The result is a fresh spring dish with beautiful texture that catches the glaze and highlights every detail of the pattern.
This is an approachable ceramic project for beginners, but it’s also a great technique for production potters, classroom settings, or anyone looking to add texture and color to slab-built pottery.
Tools & Materials
To create this spring pottery project you’ll need:
Clay Tools & Equipment
-
GR Mold Form Wood Drape Mold – Oval (SKU C-045-007)
-
MKM Flower Hand Roller – BHR-46 (SKU C-094-BHR-46)
Finishing & Firing
-
Wasabi Glaze C-43 (SKU C-054-C-43)
Using the right pottery tools makes slab projects like this fast, consistent, and repeatable, perfect if you want to make several dishes at once.
Step 1: Roll the Slab
Begin by preparing your clay and rolling it into an even slab using the Bailey Mini Might Slab Roller.
Aim for a slab thickness of about ¼ inch, which provides enough strength for a dish while still allowing the clay to drape smoothly over the mold.
After rolling, compress the clay surface with an MKM rib. Compressing the slab strengthens the clay particles and helps prevent cracking or warping during drying and firing.
Step 2: Add Floral Texture
Next, add decorative texture using the MKM Flowers Hand Roller (BHR-46).
Roll the tool across the surface of the slab with steady pressure. The repeating floral pattern instantly creates a decorative surface that will later interact beautifully with glaze.
Texture rollers are a fast and reliable way to add surface design to slab-built pottery without carving or stamping each element individually.
Step 3: Shape the Dish with a Drape Mold
Cut your slab to the size of GR Mold Form Oval Wood Drape Mold.
Carefully drape the textured slab over the mold and gently press it so the clay conforms to the oval form.
Allow the clay to firm up while resting on the mold. Once it can hold its shape, remove the dish and allow it to dry slowly and evenly.
Step 4: Bisque Fire
When the dish is fully dry, bisque fire it in a Bailey Top Loading Electric Kiln according to the firing schedule for your clay body.
Step 5: Glaze with AMACO Celadon Wasabi
Once bisque fired, it’s time to bring the piece to life with glaze.
Apply Wasabi (C-43) using a glaze brush.
Wasabi is part of the AMACO Celadon glaze line, a popular series known for its translucent color, reliable results, and ability to enhance ceramic texture.
Celadon glazes are designed to:
-
pool slightly in recesses
-
highlight carved or rolled texture
-
produce consistent results at cone 5/6
The fresh green tone of Wasabi captures the feeling of early spring while allowing the floral pattern to remain visible beneath the glaze.
Apply 2–3 coats for even coverage.
Step 6: Glaze Fire
Return the glazed dish to your Bailey Top Loading Electric Kiln and glaze fire to the recommended cone for the Celadon glaze.
Why Celadon Glazes Work So Well with Texture
The AMACO Celadon glaze line is especially popular among ceramic artists who work with textured surfaces.
Unlike opaque glazes that hide detail, Celadon glazes allow light to pass through the color layer and accentuate the depth of a pattern.
This makes them ideal for surfaces created with:
-
texture rollers
-
stamps
-
carving
-
slip trailing
For slab projects like this dish, Celadon glazes create a beautiful balance between color and surface detail.
