3 Steps to Stunning Ceramic Surfaces with Wax Resist
Ever wished your pottery had a splash of personality or a unique design? Look no further than the magic of wax resist! This simple yet versatile technique allows you to create stunning patterns and contrasting colors on your ceramic pieces.
Step 1: Base Glaze with Underglaze What you need: AMACO Velvet Underglazes (or your preferred brand), paintbrushes (bamboo or hake brush recommended for even coverage) Process: Choose your favorite underglaze color(s) and apply 2-3 full coats to your greenware. Let each coat dry completely before applying the next. Tip: Experiment with different underglaze colors for a wider color palette!
Step 2: Apply Wax Resist What you need: Wax resist, angled tip brush (for foot ring), fine-tipped applicator bottle (for detailed designs) Process: After bisque-firing your piece, use the angled brush to apply wax resist to the foot ring of your piece. Then, for more intricate designs, use the fine-tipped applicator bottle. Let your creativity flow! Tip: For clean lines, ensure the wax resist has a smooth and continuous flow. Allow the wax resist to dry completely for at least 6 hours before proceeding.
Step 3: Glaze and Fire What you need: Your chosen glaze (complementary to the underglaze color is recommended), glaze bucket Process: Dip your piece in the glaze, ensuring even coverage. The waxed areas will resist the glaze, revealing the underglaze color beneath. Fire your piece according to the glaze manufacturer's recommendations. Tip: Test a small sample piece with your chosen glaze and underglaze combination beforehand to ensure compatibility.
