New Mayco Stoneware Glazes!

New Mayco Stoneware Glazes!

Expand your palette with new glazes from Mayco! Mayco just broadened their cone 5-10 Stoneware glaze line to include new colors in matte, crystal, and clear finishes. These glazes are reliable, have a wide firing range, and contribute to a diverse collection of color shades and glazing possibilities!

These new glazes have been added to the already popular Stoneware glaze line. Between the existing Stoneware glazes and these new additions, the series has considerable variety. In case you're not familiar with the line or need a refresher, we are going to introduce you to the different types of glazes and glaze possibilities of Mayco Stoneware.

Nine new Matte Stoneware glazes have been added to the Stoneware glaze line. These matte glazes come in both solid shades as well as those that have a varied surface as they break over textured edges. As with any matte glaze, the application thickness is central to achieving beautiful matte results. Thicker glaze application will result in a more opaque glaze. Adjust your glaze thickness to achieve your desired opacity.

Seven new Crystal Stoneware glazes have also been added to the Stoneware line. These crystal glazes are full of character and are designed to expand upon the surface with bursts of color during the kiln firing. As with other crystal glazes, the crystals have a tendency to settle to the bottom of the jar, and will need thorough mixing before application. To apply, brush 2-3 coats using a fan or hake brush to the top two-thirds of the piece. Distribute the crystals evenly with the brush, and avoid the bottom third of the piece. The movement in these glazes contributes to the beauty of the finish but be aware that these glazes may run.

Finally, one new Stoneware Clear glaze has been added to the Stoneware line. This new clear is a Zinc-Free Clear designed for use on glazes that contain Chrome. This ensures that you will get a bright, color-rich surface over other glazes, colored slips, and underglazes. This is a great addition for those of you who like layering decoration under a clear and are looking for vibrant true colors.

In addition to using Mayco Stoneware glazes on their own, you can also layer Mayco Stoneware glazes and enjoy some spectacular results. Simple, two glaze combinations yield captivating surfaces. Just look at the glaze examples above! As always, testing is the only way you will begin to understand what your results will be. When testing, especially in a small test kiln, it is best to replicate the regular cycle (time and temperature rates) that you will be using to fire your glaze kiln.

All of the Mayco Stoneware glazes that you see here have been applied to a white stoneware body and fired to Cone 6 in oxidation. While Mayco Stoneware glazes were formulated for mid-range cone 5/6 firings, many are also stable and attractive at Cone 10. Review glaze labels for firing information and test the glazes in your kiln and on your clay for performance.

If you like the look of layered glazing but don't know where to begin, let us introduce you to a product specifically designed to work with the Mayco Stoneware glazes. SW-401 Mayco Flux is a unique product intended to enhance the movement of these glazes. As you can see in the cups above, the glazing on the top third of each piece appears to feather, move and vary in color. This variation is simply the result of SW-401 Mayco Flux interacting with a single Mayco Stoneware glaze. You can apply the Flux either over or under glazes for flowing results. This product was designed to fire to cone 5/6 but can also be used in cone 9/10 reduction or oxidation firings.

With all these variations in color and finish, you are sure to find a new favorite glaze. Create a new look with layered glazes or get your glazes flowing with the Mayco Flux. Firing to cone 5/6 through cone 9/10? Pick out one of these new glazes and give it a try. Happy glazing!
