Jennifer McCurdy Workshop

Jennifer McCurdy Workshop

This past weekend Bailey hosted 2 one-day workshops at the Bailey Pottery Equipment Studio. Both sold-out days were packed with enthusiastic participants from as far away as Canada. Jen, in her usual fashion, wowed our guests with her unique throwing and carving skills. For the first time ever we live-streamed a small part of her demonstration and even took a few questions from the Facebook audience. Click to view the videos.

Jen McCurdy has developed a unique style that is lyrical and dynamic. Some of her pieces look like the flames from a fire, some look like fragments from a giant ice crystal. All the work is stunningly beautiful. Although her work appears fragile it is remarkably strong because it is made of porcelain and is fired to a very high temperature. In the Bailey office area, we were able to set up a small pop-up show where workshop participants were able to see and purchase finished pieces.

Workshop guests were served a gourmet lunch by the Bailey team and were able to ask Jen more questions and commune with each other. It turned out to be a great time to make new friends.

In the afternoon Jen presented a wonderful slide presentation showing the evolution of her work. It was a testament to her ongoing investigation into how far one can go with this pure white sometimes unforgiving material, porcelain.

The last part of the day was left to show how Jen carves her work. It is very specific and time-consuming but as you can see the results are dazzling.

Jen was often asked what her favorite tools were. Jen was often asked what her favorite tools were. We put together a package of Jen's favorite tools for our customers to purchase. We were also thrilled to know she loves her Bailey Pro-XL Wheel which she announced to everyone throughout the workshop. She also fires her work in a 10 cubic foot Bailey Electric Kiln for consistent and reliable firings.

We had a great weekend with Jen and her husband Tom. Jim and I felt lucky to have such a great talent visit Bailey. Our workshop participants couldn't have agreed more.
