How to Pull a Perfect Mug Handle

How to Pull a Perfect Mug Handle

Step 1: Prepare Your Handle Lug

Start with a lug of clay that’s thick enough to pull but not too bulky. Aim for a rectangular shape, ensuring it's even throughout for a smooth pull.

Step 2: Cut and Score for Attachment

Slice one side of the lug to create a flat surface—this is where the handle will attach to your mug. Then, score (scratch) both the flat side of the handle and the mug where the handle will be placed.

Step 3: Add Slip

Apply a thin layer of slip (a clay and water mixture) with a brush to the scored areas on both the mug and handle. This ensures a strong bond when attaching.

Step 4: Position and Start Pulling

Hold your mug in one hand with the handle lug securely attached at the top. Let the rest of the handle hang downward as you prepare to pull.

Step 5: Pull the Handle

Dip your free hand in clean water and begin pulling the handle downward. Use smooth, repeated motions, gently elongating and thinning the clay. Keep your movements even and controlled for a natural taper.

Step 6: Shape the Handle

As the handle extends, use your fingertips to shape and refine it. You can add a subtle curve for comfort and aesthetics.

Step 7: Trim the Handle Length

Once the handle reaches your desired length and shape, use a wire tool or knife to trim off the excess at the bottom.

Step 8: Attach the Bottom of the Handle

Score the mug and the trimmed bottom of the handle, then apply slip. Press the handle gently into place, ensuring a strong attachment.

Step 9: Clean and Lift

Smooth out any rough areas around the attachment points. Finally, give the handle a slight lift at the top connection point to prevent sagging as it dries.

Step 10: Let It Dry Slowly

Slow, even drying is key to avoiding cracks. Cover your mug loosely with plastic to help it dry at a controlled pace before firing.
