How to Change Thermocouples in Bailey Top Loading Electric Kilns
Thermocouples are the probes that read the temperature inside the kiln. Bailey Top Loading Electric Kilns are multi-zone and will have two or three thermocouples. The controller relies on them to determine when and where to input power to the various zones.
Over time, the thermocouple wires deteriorate, usually at the tip where the two wires are welded together. If the wire breaks, the thermocouple will not be able to read temperature. When this happens, the controller will display the message 'tC #' alternating with the word 'FAIL'. (Note: thermocouples are numbered top to bottom, therefore, tC 1 is the Top, tC 2 is the Middle and tC 3 is the Bottom.) If all the thermocouples fail, the kiln will shut down and display the word 'FAIL'.
If one thermocouple fails in a multi-zone kiln, the kiln will continue to fire based on the readings from remaining thermocouples. However, the controller may have difficulty keeping the zones even and Error Messages may be triggered.
Changing thermocouples is easy and it is suggested that, if one fails, you replace all of them as the others will be similarly worn. To determine which thermocouple is right for your kiln, have the Model # and Serial # ready and call 800-431-6067 ext 116. Watch our new video to see how quick and easy it is!
