Fresh Designs, Flawless Results: Get Creative with Underglaze Transfers
Unleash your inner artist and create a stunning citrus platter using underglaze transfers! In this post, we'll walk you through the process of applying a brand new "Citrus" design onto a beautiful platter hand-formed from a GR Pottery Forms mold and crafted with high-quality Tucker's Bright White Porcelain Clay.
Process Steps for Citrus Platter with Underglaze Transfers
Step 1: Prep Your Clay
- Gather your supplies: GR Pottery Forms mold, Tucker's Bright White Porcelain Clay, rolling pin or slab roller, pottery knife, and water container.
- Prepare your clay for the slab roller using the Dirty Girls Great White Roller Straight
- Roll out a slab of clay using the Bailey Mini Might II Table Top Slab Roller, or any slab roller or rolling pin, with a thickness of approximately 1/4 inch (6mm).
- Cut around a GR Pottery Form with a clay knife to create a slab the size of the mold you will be using.
Step 2: Apply the Underglaze Transfer
- Prepare your brand new "Citrus" underglaze transfer by cutting it to the desired size and design placement on your platter.
- Position the transfer and gently press it onto the damp clay surface.
- Use a damp sponge to lightly burnish the transfer, applying even pressure ensure good adhesion.
- Slowly and carefully peel away the transfer paper, revealing the beautiful citrus design on your platter.
Step 3: Form Your Platter
- Place your Slab Face up on a piece of furniture foam
- Press the GR Pottery Form wooden mold in the Rounded Rectangle shape agaimst the slab
- OR gently lay your rolled-out clay slab over the mold, either way: press firmly and evenly to ensure the clay takes the shape of the mold.
- Allow to set up for a few hours or overnight
- Carefully flip and remove the platter from the mold
- Smooth and finish with a sponge
Step 4: Drying and Firing
- Allow your decorated platter to dry completely. This can take 24-48 hours depending on the thickness of your clay.
- Once dry, fire your platter according to the recommended firing schedule for your underglaze transfer.
- We bisque fired to cone 04
- Apply a Zinc free clear glaze like Spectrum's 1100 Transparent and then fire to Cone 5 in a medium Bailey Top Loading Electric Kiln
Step 5: Enjoy Your Creation!
- After firing, your citrus platter is complete and ready to use or display!
