The Bailey Pottery Story
It all began with a Slab Roller…
In 1974, Jim Bailey had just left art school when he brought his passion for pottery to a studio in Upstate New York. Jim’s love of clay quickly translated into the creation of innovative tools for the trade, and in 1975 he released his first piece of commercial pottery equipment: the 30” slab roller. With Jim’s slab roller, a task that previously took over an hour could now be accomplished in a single minute, and the equipment quickly gained popularity among potters.
Within two years, the Bailey Slab Roller was featured by Potter Studio Magazine and evaluated alongside top competing brands. Although other manufacturers had been in the field for many years, the newcomer Bailey Slab Roller was rated the best piece of equipment by a team of professional potters. Thus began the reputation for Bailey innovation.
In 1979, Bailey Pottery Equipment set up its first manufacturing facility in a rented space in Kingston, New York. As customer requests poured in, Jim’s innovations grew, and he designed new products including an extruder, kilns, and a potter’s wheel.
Expanding the Business
Anne Shattuck Bailey joined the company in 1984 to develop the Ceramic Supplies division. As a renowned professional potter, Anne utilized her extensive knowledge of tools and materials to quickly grow the division. From its beginnings as a small mail-order catalog, Bailey Ceramic Supplies evolved into a world-renowned supplier, shipping a vast selection of high-quality pottery supplies all around the world.
Today, Bailey Pottery Equipment and Bailey Ceramic Supplies occupy a 100-year-old brick factory on Ten Broeck Avenue in Midtown Kingston, New York. The company manufactures everything from potter’s wheels to 100 cubic-foot kilns. In addition to the manufacturing facility, Bailey Pottery houses a gallery showroom that displays over 500 pots from the 20th and 21st centuries.
