Throwing bats are placed on top of the wheelhead when throwing on a potters wheel. Pieces are made on a bat so they can be removed and set aside to set up while additional pieces are thrown. Allowing the clay to stiffen on the bat reduces the distortion that can occur when a wet piece is cut free with a wire. Bats are made from a variety of materials, each with different properties. A general overview of these materials appears below. More detailed information about specific bats can be found by clicking on individual items.
