Underglazes

What are underglazes?
Underglazes are ceramic pigments suspended in a liquid medium, similar to paint. But unlike regular paints, they're specially formulated to withstand the high temperatures of a kiln firing. Underglazes are used in pottery to create designs and patterns that will come up through the transparent glaze covering them. They are applied to a greenware or bisque surface, then covered with a transparent glaze. Underglazes alone won't change the surface texture of the piece, only the color. Underglazes are great for painting designs and patterns; from simple lines and dots to intricate landscapes, underglazes allow you to add intricate details. Underglazes work great to accentuate existing textures on your piece. Achieve depth and dimension by layering different colors and techniques.

Besides liquid underglazes, there are increasing options available for underglaze application.
Try out, underglaze pencils, underglaze crayons, underglaze stamp pad, underglaze transfers, semi-moist underglaze pads which can be used like watercolors, and Graffito Underglaze Transfer Paper works on the same principle as carbon paper but the image is transferred in underglaze.
