Nicholas Mosse, Maker of Mystery Pot 51!
Nicholas Mosse is a renowned Irish potter, celebrated for his high-quality, hand-crafted pottery and distinctive designs. Born in 1947 in Ireland, Mosse was deeply inspired by the country's rich ceramic traditions. Honing his craft for many years under the stewardship of talented potters in Harrow, England, Nick developed a genuine passion for clay.
In 1976, he founded his pottery studio in the village of Bennettsbridge, County Kilkenny, where he developed a reputation for creating beautiful, functional ceramics. Nick and his wife Susan purchased the Mosse family mill and lovingly restored it before moving the pottery there.
Nicholas Mosse has become a well-respected brand, known for its commitment to quality craftsmanship. Nick and his team make every single piece of pottery, following a 20 step handmade process.
Nicholas Mosse’s pottery is distinguished by its combination of traditional techniques and vibrant, hand-sponged designs. Susan is the talented botanical artist and designer behind the studio’s signature patterns, which take inspiration from the hedgerows and wildflowers that surround her in the Bennettsbridge countryside and from her Kilfane garden.
Over the years, the company's distinctive pottery has gained international recognition, with their beautiful pieces cherished in kitchens and homes worldwide.
Jim and Anne Bailey had the pleasure of visiting the Nicholas Mosse pottery during a recent trip to Ireland. Below are a few photos taken during their visit.
