John Gill, Maker of Mystery Pot 48!

John Gill is a ceramic artist and educator well known as a former professor of New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, where he began teaching in 1984. He is known for creating abstracted teapots and pots that contain geometric forms and bold colors. Gill’s work is influenced by a modernist approach to ceramics.

Gill was born in 1949 in Renton, Washington and went on to receive his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1973. He received his MFA in 1975 from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, where he also met his wife and ceramic artist, Andrea Gill. (You may remember her work from our previous Mystery Pot contest!)

John Gill is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics, a fellow of the American Crafts Council, and has presented lectures and workshops in the US and internationally. His work is present in numerous permanent collections of art museums including the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Newark Museum in New Jersey, the Houston Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Hudson Valley locals have the wonderful opportunity to attend an artist talk given by Gill in the coming weeks! Gill will be giving a free, open to the public artist talk at 7pm on Friday, September 8th at Sugar Maples Center for Creative Arts. The talk coincides with the first day of Gill's sold out workshop "Five Days with Adjectives" at Sugar Maples.
