The TigerPly and Baltic Birch bats absorb moisture much like plaster but is more durable and lighter weight. This is useful as it helps prevent “S” cracks in the center of plates and bowls (where the clay stays much wetter for a longer period of time compared with the side walls of the form. The TigerPly and Baltic plywoods don’t degrade and warp as easily as the Medex bats (which will swell if too much exposure to water. You shouldn’t let any wooden bats be soaked for extended periods of time.
Baltic and TiberPly bats are thicker and more rigid than masonite, medex or plastic. Clay adheres well and moisture is drawn from the foot of the piece as it dries so cutting off with a wire is not always necessary. Do not saturate Wood bats or submerge them in water- this will cause them to warp and delaminate.
