MKM Glaze Mixing Paddle
This paddle can be used for hand building but it also makes an excellent
paddle for stirring glazes. Fits a 5-Gal bucket perfectly with a handle long
enough to stick out of the pail. It gets into the corners, really moves the
glaze, never clogs up, and rinses off with a quick dip into the wash bucket.
The wood is soaked in hot mineral oil to make it durable. smooth on both
sides.
Measures 17-1/4” L x 3-1/8” W.

MKM Decorating Disks

It's the
holes! Hundred of small holes at the
intersection of the concentric circles and
radial lines allow the user to mark right through the disk. The holes are
large enough for either a pin tool, pencil, or pen tip to fit
through.
MKM Small Decorating Disks
The MKM Decorating Disks also come in a small size, each disk
measuring only 4 inches in diameter - perfect for use with small
items, with feet, and for placing inside bowls and plates for
decorating purposes.
MKM Large Decorating Disks
The large MKM Decorating Disks come as a set of two 16 x 16 inch
(40.5 cm x 40.5 cm) transparent Mylar disks. Each disk has a series of
concentric circles divided by colored radial lines. At the intersection of
the circles and radial lines are small holes that allow the user to mark
right through the disk.

MKM Coco Ribs
|
|

|
| MKM
CocoRibs are made from coconut shells. CocoRibs are tough
and their ergonomic shape and natural curves make them very suitable
for both throwing and hand building. The ribs have been soaked in
mineral oil. Natural variation: Some of the CocoRibs are made from
younger coconuts, in which case the shell will be lighter in color and
somewhat thinner, and some are made from older coconuts, in which case
the shell will be darker and somewhat thicker. The size of the coconut
may also vary, resulting in ribs that have sharper or less sharp
curves. And because the meat of the coconut is removed, in many cases
by hand with a knife, the interior of the CocoRib may be marked or
scratched. All these represent the natural variation of the material
used to make these ribs, and should not affect the performance of the
rib in any way. |
|
|
Coco Rib Set
7 CocoRibs available as a bagged set. The smallest rib is approximately 2
inches long, and the largest is 5 or 6 inches across the long dimension.
How to take care of your MKM CocoRibs:
If the edge comes rough (and many do), or
becomes rough during use, a few strokes with a piece of sand paper (80 grit
is fine) will smooth it up quickly.

Tips for using your CocoRibs
|
|
CocoRibs
were intended for hand building -- for pushing out walls and scraping and
smoothing curved surfaces. The idea for developing a series of ribs made
from coconuts came from reading an article about Magdalene Odundo. And they
do work incredibly well for hand building. However, when I tried them out
for throwing, I found that they worked equally well with this technique.
Their natural curves made them easy to hold and easy to use. The edge was
hard, but could easily be sanded smooth, and coconut shells are naturally
durable in water. If you wish to remove throwing lines, then use a CocoRib
on the exterior. I do a lot of brushwork on my pottery, so I am in the habit
of smoothing the exterior of some of my pottery.

CocoRib
# C3 being used on the interior of a small bowl. One way to make
a bowl:
1)
Bring the wall of the bowl up in an outward flowing curve similar to the
bowl in the previous picture.
2) Bring the wall to the desired height
of the bowl, and the rim out to the desire, or almost desired, width of the
bowl.
3) (Optional) Use a curved rib or
CocoRib to smooth the exterior of the bowl, and to remove the slip.
4) Use a rib to push out the wall of the
bowl, and to stretch the wall of the bowl into its final configuration. This
allows the rib to set a beautiful surface on the interior of the bowl.
5) Alter as necessary. Or not.

MKM Throwing Tools

 |
|
These tools come in 5
configurations and sizes. The tools come with the rib(s) pictured.
N0TE: The ribs at the end of the tools
should be tightened before using so that they do not rotate
while in use. |

Tool
This tool can snicker through small

even when the opening at the top is not small, but where reaching in and
under would be awkward. Length of the handle is 7 3/4 inches (19.7 cm)

Important
notes about using MKM Ultimate Throwing Sticks
1.
The rib head needs to be screwed down tightly to the handle so that the rib
does not rotate while in use. I originally thought a loose rib that changed
position in accordance to the configuration of the clay wall would work
well. But it doesn't. The rib flops around and is hard to control. It is
much easier to secure the rib firmly to the handle.
2.
Hold the handle with the left hand, and tilt the rib slightly so that the
rib is trailing along the surface of the clay.
3.
Use an expired credit card, old hotel door key card, or Sherril Mud Tool
flexible rib on the outside. Of course, you can also use your fingers, but I
have to say that I find it easier to keep the clay under control when it
gets thin when I use a flexible rib on the outside and a rigid rib on the
inside.
The ribs on the MKM Ultimate Throwing Sticks are removable. They are
attached using two washers, and then a machine screw that screws into a
tapered metal insert. The insert is screwed into the wood handle from the
opposite side so that it can't be pulled through the handle. This means that
the ribs can easily be replaced with a rib of a different shape, either one
made by MKM, or one made or adjusted in shape by you. If the hole in the rib
is too large, simply use a larger fender washer (a large washer with a small
screw hole - available at most hardware stores.)
