Safety

Many materials used by potters in glazes and clay are potentially hazardous substances. We at Bailey feel you should take precautions to minimize exposure.

1. Keep dry materials covered, handle carefully and avoid spillage.
2. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator when handling dry materials.
3. Wear rubber gloves when glazing or applying oxides and stains.
4. Keep your workspace clean and free from dust.
5. Use a wet mop or toxic dust vacuum for cleaning only- never sweep.
6. Do not eat or smoke in your workspace.
7. Wash your work clothes separately from other clothing.

Application Instructions

To use the Texas Two Step glazes, simply apply a Step One Undercoat to bisque ware (2 or 3 coats brushing, 1 coat dipped) and wait for it to dry completely. Then, cover all or part of the first color with a Step Two Overcoat (2 or 3 coats brushing).  When the piece is fired to cone 5/6 in an electric kiln, the glazes will interact, creating a phenomenal oil spot effect.  Varying the thickness of the glazes during application will have a dramatic effect on the finished piece: the thicker the glazes are applied, the larger the spots they create will be.  Coyote has found the optimum thickness to be 2 coats of the Step One Undercoat and 3 coats of Step Two Overcoat, but you may prefer thicker or thinner applications for different effects.
