Plastic Bats
Plastic bats are easily the most durable choice for throwing bats. They do not wear out due to heavy use, making them popular with schools and group studios. Plastic bats do not absorb water and therefore won’t swell or de-laminate and the pin-holes remain true. It is, however, necessary to cut pieces free with a wire shortly after throwing as moisture will not be absorbed from the clay where it contacts the bat. If left too long, pieces will warp or crack due to uneven drying.

Plasti-Bat (Brent)
Made of solid plastic textured on one side to prevent clay from sliding during centering. Holes are drilled 10” on center, one hole slightly larger to accommodate variations in bat pin positions. Also available undrilled.

C.I. Bats (Creative Industries)
Made of injection-molded plastic with both 9” and 10” pin holes recessed in a grid-like understructure leaving no holes in the surface of the bat. There is a recessed ledge around the perimeter to get your fingers underneath for easy removal. The top surface is roughened to prevent clay from sliding during centering. Available in both traditional round as well as a space-saving 7” square that still fits both 9” and 10” bat pins but requires much less space on studio shelves.

Plaster Bats
Plaster is the traditional material for throwing bats. Pieces can be left on plaster bats until they self-release because plaster continues to absorb moisture from the clay longer than even masonite or pressed wood. Shipping plaster bats has always been prohibitive due to weight, cost and damages, until now.... Make your own flat or customized plaster bats at home with the Quick Release Mold System: all the benefits of plaster bats without the shipping cost and trouble!

Masonite & Pressed Wood Bats
These types of bats are made of dense, press-board type materials. Not as durable as plastic, they are semi-absorbent and should not be submerged in or saturated with water as they will warp and de-laminate. The benefits of this absorbent quality are: (1) clay adheres better to the surface during centering; (2) moisture will be absorbed from the clay during the early stages of drying; pieces can be left to stiffen longer before cutting free with a wire.

Duron Bats (Pacifica)
Made of sturdy 1/4" Masonite with pin holes drilled 10” on center (one slightly larger to accommodate pin variations). Duron Bats are available in 12”, 13” and 15” diameters.

Hydro-Bats...10 times stronger than pottery plaster bats!

The Hydro-Bat is made of Hydro-Stone, a USG product. It is 8 to 10 times stronger then pottery plaster. It contains cement and crystalline silica. These give it strength and a little extra weight. They will absorb water like plaster. The surface is scratch resistant and infinitely stronger than pottery plaster.

The Hydro-Bat was designed to fit on wheel heads that have bat pins spaced ten inches apart on center. The hydro bat’s rubber grommet fits over the 3/8” bat pin head with 1/256” tolerance, so if you are off even slightly the bats might not fit.

The 8.5” and 10” Hydro-Bat’s require an adapter. The adapter is cut on a laser and converts 10 inch pins to 6 inches. This adapter can also be used as a template to drill 6in. holes permanently into your wheel head. The 8.5”, 10”, 12.5”, and 14” bats are 3/4” thick. The 16” and 18” bats are 1” thick. The 20” and 24” bats are 1-1/4” thick.
