Our
first slab rollers were built in 1974. From the beginning, Bailey
Rollers became famous for their innovation and precision. In a
thorough evaluation of all existing slab rollers, Studio Potter
Magazine stated, “The Bailey represented the most sophisticated
solution to the business of making slabs. It was superior in its
ease of handling, design, and general adaptation to any studio
situation.” The Bailey Slab Rollers are “Dual Roller Drive”.
With this process, clay and canvas are drawn through two steel
rollers which turn at a one-to-one ratio. The tremendous force
required to compress the clay is equalized between the two
rollers. This two roller process insures that the thickness of the
finished slab remains perfectly even from side to side. Because
the Dual Roller Drive process draws the clay through the
stationary machine, the operator can stand in a stationary upright
position and turn the drive wheel. |

Bailey Mini 22" Table Roller
The New Bailey Mini 22" Table Roller utilizes the same dependable “dual
roller drive” process as other top-of-the-line Bailey models. A sturdy
hand crank delivers ample leverage to effortlessly roll slabs through
the machine. This machine is virtually indestructible!
The New Bailey Mini 22" Table Roller design is a combination
slab roller and table mount in one machine. You get perfect slabs every
time. Take notice of the small textured rollers. The reduced diameter
of the rollers (in combination with the 15” crank) is the reason that it
is so easy to roll a slab. The thickness is varied by adding or removing
Masonite shims. Every machine is supplied with a set of Masonite shims and
a slab sheet. This improved version includes side guides to keep the Masonite
on center as they pass through the rollers.
The Bailey Mini 22" Table Roller is ready to use by
setting on your own existing sturdy table. With the addition of the Mini
Leg Set, the Mini 22” Table Roller is converted into a free standing
table. Assembly required for Roller and Table.

The best quality

The economical Bailey Basic 30-D Slab Roller is the perfect slab
roller for the serious hobbyist potter. This machine is intended to offer
all the professional features for potters who require a low volume output
of slabs. When used with this expectation, the machine will last a
lifetime. Professionals and schools intending to use a slab roller for
demanding production should refer to our DRD/II and DRD original rollers
with more robust gears and bearings.
Features
The rollers are 30” wide and made of knurled aluminum. A 23” diameter
round wheel connects directly to the shaft of the bottom roller (direct
drive). When feeding clay through the Bailey Basic 30D, use plastic easily
wedged clay to feed through the machine. The thickness of the finished
slab (1/16 to 2") will determine the height of the feed clay. Because
this is an economy direct drive machine, the leverage to
roll the slab is supplied by the 23" wheel. To use a machine of this
direct drive design, you never want to pile very high as it will create
more effort to roll the slab (this is true of all direct drive rollers
with 2-1/2" rollers). For a
professional quality machine with a lifetime warranty, look at our DRD/II
machines with a mechanical reduction. They have larger wheels (more
leverage) and an additional mechanical reduction system to make slab
formation effortless.
Each machine includes a
round handle and canvas.
Simultaneous height
adjustment is made simple at one side of the machine. An accurate inch
scale is provided for accurate measurements.

At only 4’-4” long, the Bailey Basic 30 Table is a great
space saver, has more work area, it has casters for rolling, and it allows
for better compression in the slab. It can also push the slab further
without buckling.
1) Unlike other brand
tables, the slab machine is off to one side. On a Bailey table, the feed
area is smaller because you don't need much space to feed clay through the
machine. The slab area is larger so you get a full 32" work
area for your finished slab. This is a great advantage and a much
better use of space.
2) The Bailey table is
bi-level with a lower level feed counter so there is more of
the bottom roller exposed for better gripping of the canvas and
clay. The also gives better compression for a stronger slab. The slab
counter is higher (almost level with the top of the bottom roller) so the
slab rolls out longer with greater variety of thicknesses without
bunching. Bailey always has better ideas for better performance!
3) The Bailey table has
wheels, so you can move your slab roller around the studio conveniently.
4) To save you money, we
now offer the counters optional. You can buy all the steel components and
save by cutting your counters. Shipped knocked down for final assembly.
Economical Counter
Option
Save more
money by putting your own counter on our table.
To get the best value and save more money, Bailey now makes the counter
for our table optional. A counter is only two pieces of wood that
is inexpensive and easily cut. In fact, you may already have extra plywood
or particle board at your home ready to use. If not, buy an inexpensive
sheet of wood at a lumber supply like Lowe's or Home Depot (less than
about $25) and have them cut to size for free! You save shipping a heavy
counter, you save our labor, and because of our extensive packing, you
save all the wasted packing materials. Naturally we supply the dimensions
for the two cuts (32" x 30" and 16" x 30").
Economical Table Mount
Counter Option
Of course for further savings, you can always mount your Bailey Basic-D
roller to your existing table. With a couple of ramp style counters, you
ready to go. The intake and output ramps are placed in position (no
fastening required) and away you go. If you use your table for other
functions, then just lift and remove the counters to free up the table
space. We supply the dimensions to make your own, or they can be
purchased.

Various brands of slab rollers
may look similar, but how do they perform? Just look at the “One
Pass Slabbing” photo and you will see proof of how a Bailey
can roll a large mass of clay in one pass to a desired thickness.
Bailey rollers are designed to offer indefinite service with this
kind of load.
You might assume all slab
rollers can perform like a Bailey, but guess again. One of our
competitors builds a slab roller that should be called a “slab
smoother”. Their machine requires several passes to form a slab,
or you are severely restricted in how high you can pile the clay
when feeding it through the machine.
The DRD/II
series comes with a canvas and a 4 spoke handle (pictured lower
left).
An optional 34" diameter round wheel is available (shown with
the machines at the left). This large wheel gives ample leverage
to make rolling easier and more fluid. A Reverse-Threaded Adapter
now comes standard on both the 4-spoke and round handle of all
gear-reduced machines. Designed especially for classrooms and
group studios, the RTA will prevent students from damaging the
machine.
An optional 34" diameter round wheel is available. This large
wheel gives ample leverage to make rolling easier and more fluid.
For classrooms, be sure to order the reverse threaded handle
adaptor for the gear model. This will prevent students from
damaging the machine.
There are two table options.
The larger 6’ long table has a full 48” long area on the right
side of the machine to work on the finished slab. A new shorter 4'
long table has a 32" work area. This 4' long table is a real
space saver for a small studio. All Bailey tables have a small
feed counter with the machine offset on the table (not in the
middle) which gives more area for the finished slab on the right
side of the machine. The counters are made of Melamine. Melamine
surfaces should not be saturated with water or coated directly
with wet clay (assembly required).

all steel gear reduction is available on the
30" and the 24"-Gear Reduced models. This gear
reduction makes slab rolling much easier compared to
direct drive. Bailey never uses nylon or plastic gears
which can break under load. Our machines use only
machined steel gears. |

side-to-side height adjustments are a hassle, not a help.
Tapered slabs are a nuisance! With a Bailey, you turn only
one knob to raise the upper roller with perfect precision.
A height scale makes measurements from 1/32 to 1-1/2"

One
Pass Slabbing
Wedgeable clay can be piled as high as 3”, and rolled in
one pass to form a slab. Other brands require multiple
passes to form a slab.
Dual
Level Table
Note our unique bi-level table tops. The feed counter
is lower which increases the surface contact of the clay
with the bottom roller, providing perfect compression. The
finished slab projects out on the raised counter for the
longest possible slab travel.

The Reverse-Threaded Handle Adapter
Extra Protection for Schools, group studios and Workshops
The DRD/II 30" and 24"-G models are designed for
one way travel only during slab compression. The machine
has a ratchet to prevent reverse rotation of the rollers.
The standard Reverse-Threaded Handle Adapter prevents any
mechanical damage due to abuse from students who might
apply unreasonable force by turning the handle the wrong
direction until they break the ratchet or gear. The Reverse-Threaded
Adapter has reverse threads that will simply unscrew
the handle instead of breaking the ratchet mechanism
should a student forcefully turn the wheel the wrong
direction. This adapter is now standard on all DRD/II
30 and 24G models. (Please note: the
Reverse-Threaded Adapter is not available in the DRD/II 24
Direct Drive model.)
