Bailey Kilns - Venting a Bailey Gas Kiln

Venting a Bailey Gas Kiln
When ordering a kiln, give us a call and we will determine what materials you will need for a safe hook-up. We also require that you send a diagram of your kiln room, indicating the relevant vertical dimensions at the point where the venting materials will exit the structure. Never attempt to hook up a kiln without the technical assistance of our staff. Using the wrong materials can have serious consequences.

Bailey kilns do not require a “continuous” chimney. Our kilns are designed to fire properly with the draft that is supplied by both the kiln’s short chimney and the forced draft burners. Heat escaping from the exit at the top of the kiln chimney is immediately mixed with cool ambient air in our combustion hood and then channeled into a variety of appropriately rated stainless steel venting materials.

Our stainless steel combustion hood is attached to the kiln chimney (which ends at the top of the kiln). This combustion hood (which is non-load bearing) provides a double function:

1. It collects the heat exiting the square kiln chimney and channels it into appropriately rated insulated flu pipe (consult with Bailey for specifics).

2. The hood is opened on two sides to allow ample cool air to mix with the hot gases exiting the kiln. This is necessary in order to reduce the temperatures within the stainless venting materials.

From this point, insulated stainless steel will be used. The temperature rating and style of the insulated pipe will determined through consultation with the Bailey staff.

Venting applications can vary widely: single or multiple story; vertical sloped, or horizontal exit; open or artificial ceilings; etc. Because of the many possible configurations, only through a consultation with one of our staff can the appropriate venting by determined for your situation. A direct vertical vent is always preferable.

Local building codes must be followed. We only sell materials for Bailey brands. Do not use this basic example for venting a Bailey Kiln for any other brand. Do not hook up any Bailey Kiln without consulting with our factory.

Bailey Combustion, Spy, Burner Port and Residual Collection Hoods

Source Capture Residual Fume Collection (*optional)
This stainless steel hood provides the ultimate in efficient fume removal. Known in the industry as the “source-capture” technique, the residual fumes are removed from the environment before students or employees are exposed to noxious fumes. This hood tapers up from the
Combustion Hood (optional on all models)
The stainless steel combustion hood collects all the hot combustion gases and mixes them with ambient air from the kiln room. We produce various designs in hoods to meet the particular requirements of the kiln site. We also will engineer all your venting needs
back of the kiln and extends well over the door seal area (see illustration). Draft induction must be supplied to complete the system.

Spy Port Fume Collection (*optional)
This new innovation by Bailey provides the perfect solution for capturing reduction fumes that escape from the kiln and can pollute your kiln indoor kiln room. Each hood draws the fumes back into the kiln so that it can be channeled into the Residual hood and away.

from the hood, to the insulated pipe (appropriate for kiln applications), flashing, and the final cap.

Burner Port Fume Hoods (optional on all models)
Working in conjunction with an adapted Combustion Hood, Bailey has innovated this new Burner Port Hood which captures and routes all flame and reduction by-products up into the combustion hood. This is the most effective way to prevent pollution in the kiln room!
