How to Change Bailey Electric Kiln Elements

If you have a Bailey top-loading electric kiln in your studio, or are thinking about owning one, we have a video series to help you learn about your kiln and how to maintain it. In this video you will learn how to replace elements with confidence.

Bailey kilns are built to fire easily up to cone 10. If you have a new Bailey kiln your elements will perform for a long time before you need to replace them. But there will eventually come a day when the elements in your kiln are ready to be replaced. Luckily, you don't need to be a kiln repair person or an electrican to take on this task.

How do you know when it's time to change your elements? If firings are getting long it may be time to assess your elements. Sometimes a visual inspection is all that is required. First, look for breaks along the coils. If there are none, perform a full power test and look to see whether all elements are glowing brightly. Dull color or dark spots may be a sign that the element is not performing adequately. You can also test your element with a ohm meter to see if the element is conducting power. If there is no reading, then there is a break in the element.

When you have decided to replace an element in your kiln you will need some information to purchase the correct replacement. The model number, voltage, serial number, and the location of the element (top, middle, or floor), are required and can be located on the name plate of your kiln. As always, do not attempt any type of kiln maintenance until the power to the kiln has been shut off at the breaker.
