Coyote's Slow Cool Glazes include three crystal glazes, an aventurine glaze, and a beautiful iron red. Finally, there are crystal glazes without running or seeding, and which you can fire along with your other glazes. These new glazes look their best when cooled slowly. Most modern electric kilns are less insulated than their gas fired counterparts, resulting in a quick cooling cycle that prevents many glazes from developing the richness they might otherwise have. Iron reds, crystaline glazes and others should be slow cooled to achieve their best effects. (See '˜Tips/Safety' for the recommended firing cycle.) Many other glazes can benefit from a slow cool down as well. Test your favorites and see! All Coyote Slow Cool glazes are... Read More

Safety -Many materials used by potters in glazes and clay are potentially hazardous substances. We at Bailey feel you should take precautions to minimize exposure.

  1. Keep dry materials covered, handle carefully and avoid spillage.
  2. Wear a NIOSH approved respirator when handling dry materials.
  3. Wear rubber gloves when glazing or applying oxides and stains.
  4. Keep your workspace clean and free from dust.
  5. Use a wet mop or toxic dust vacuum for cleaning only- never sweep.
  6. Do not eat or smoke in your workspace.
  7. Wash your work clothes separately from other clothing.

Tips -

Coyote Slow Cool Glaze Firing Cycle

Recommended Slow Cool firing cycle:

Ramps: 5

100/hr to 220 no hold
350/hr to 2000 no hold
150/hr to 2200 hold 15 minutes
500/hr to 2150 hold for 15 minutes
125/hr to 1400 no hold, cool naturally

Always use witness cones to confirm your heat work. In this case, Cone 5, 6 & 7. Your witness cone 5 should be all the way down, and the witness cone 6 should be approx. halfway over (between cone 5 1/2 and 6), cone 7 should be mostly straight. Thermocouples tend to vary slightly so you may need to adjust the top temperature for your kiln to achieve the best results.

These new glazes look fabulous in regular firings as well.  A slow cool will maximize the growth of crystals and bring out the best in these glazes, but is not necessary to make them work well.
