The History of Bailey Dual
Roller Drive
|
|
Our first slab rollers were
built in 1974. From the beginning, Bailey Rollers became famous for their
innovation and precision. In a thorough evaluation of all existing slab
rollers, Studio Potter Magazine stated, “The Bailey represented the most
sophisticated solution to the business of making slabs. It was superior in
its ease of handling, design, and general adaptation to any studio
situation.” The Bailey Slab Rollers are
“Dual Roller Drive”. With this process, clay and canvas are drawn
through two steel rollers which turn at a one-to-one ratio. The tremendous
force required to compress the clay is equalized between the two rollers.
This two roller process insures that the thickness of the finished slab
remains perfectly even from side to side. Because the Dual Roller Drive
process draws the clay through the stationary machine, the operator can
stand in a stationary upright position and turn the drive wheel.

Bailey Original Dual Roller
Drive
Since 1974, Bailey Rollers
have always been the Professional’s #1 Choice.
- The only Slab Roller
built for heavy production use
- All ball bearing
drive
- #40 Chain/Sprocket
Drive
- Gear Reduced
- Portable
- Two table options
- 2 sizes: 30"
& 40" wide
The original DRD Series introduced in
1978 is the finest slab roller built anywhere. The DRD slab rollers
are designed for professionals who want maximum load output, exacting
accuracy, and a trouble-free operation. Clay is rolled in one pass to the
desired thickness. No other roller even comes close to this robust
versatile design.
The DRD Series comes in two sizes: 30”
and 40” wide. Each machine has two steel rollers mounted in heavy
duty ball bearings. The rollers are driven by a #40 chain and sprocket to
insure maximum strength under heavy loads. The 30” and 40” machines
utilize massive 4” rollers that have been gear reduced for easy manual
operation. The rollers are coated with an industrial epoxy abrasive to
provide a positive “non-slip” traction.
Thickness adjustments can be made from
1/16” up to 1-3/4". Adjustments are instantly and accurately
made from a single knob located at the top of the machine. This knob
raises and lowers both sides of the upper roller simultaneously. A height
scale indicator is provided for quick reference and exact measurements.
Only clay and canvas are needed to roll
a slab. However, a wood board can be run through the machine with the
clay and canvas to assist when forming massive slabs over 1¼“ thick.
Each machine comes with a 10 foot canvas, instructions and table plans.
Heavy duty steel tables are listed below. Manual machines have a large 34”
drive wheel for additional leverage to make turning easier.

The
DRD Short Table (optional)
The short table is a “stand” on
wheels that functions as a housing for the machine and “clay feed”
area. When butted up against a stationary work table, slabs are rolled
through the machine and onto the work table surface. This feature is an
asset to any studio that is limited in space, or for situations where
several potters are going to share the same machine and will need to roll
the machine around. (Assembly required) Specifications:
Dimensions: width of roller by 30” long by 34” high.
|
|
The DRD Long Table
(optional)
The Long Table is a complete outfit containing both the “clay feed”
and the “finished slab” work area. The table is also excellent for
other studio functions when the roller is not in use. (Assembly required).
Specifications:
Dimensions: width of roller by 7 ft. long x 34” high.

Bailey Electric Dual Roller
Drive
Electric drive is an asset for the high production artist requiring a
large number of slabs daily. Large numbers of slabs are effortlessly
produced. The remote control “pusher bar” protects hands and provides
the means to advance the clay into the rollers. A steel table must be
ordered with each electric unit. Minor assembly is required.
Specifications: 115V, 4.6 amps.
General Specifications:
Slab Dimensions: Width of roller by any length (10’ canvas
Thickness Variable: 0” to 1-3/4", infinitely variable.
Drive System: #40 chain and sprocket, ball bearings, gear reduced
for easy slabbing.
Table Dimensions: (see DRD Options under photos)
NOTE: When ordering an
electric roller, a table must be ordered.

DRIVE
BOARD SERIES
|
|

The Bailey Drive Board 30 Slab
Roller with optional DB Long Table
Standard
Features:
Besides the unique drive board system, the DB Series offers the
same height adjustment and construction features as our original
DRD Series.
We
offer two sizes in the DB:
30” and 40” wide.
Thickness
Variable: 0 to 1-3/4".
Drive
Board Table Options:
The DB tables are longer than the DRD series because
they are bi-directional. Assembly is required. Take special not of
the function of the "short" table.
The
DB Short Table:
The DB short table is mobile and has a 48" counter
on one side of the machine and a small 8" ramp on the other side. It is
designed to save space in the studio. You roll this short table up
to an existing table of compatible height and roll the board from
the 48" side through the machine and onto your table. The
short table is not self sufficient for the process. It requires an
additional table to receive the drive board. Dimensions: 5 foot
long by roller width by 34” high
The
DB Long Table:
The long table provides 48" surfaces either side
of the machine for the drive board. The machine can run right to
left, or, left to right. 8½’ long by roller width by 34”
high.
| Since
1975, Bailey has been building slab rollers that
professional handbuilders and production potters have
staked their livelihoods on. Our DRD/II, DRD and DB series
are easy to adjust for precision thickness control and
designed to roll clay in just one pass to a specified
thickness. Our machines are rugged and designed to offer
years of trouble free service. Bailey rollers are the
first choice of potters like Peter King, author of
Architectural Ceramics for the Studio Potter.

Bailey Unique Drive
Board Series
The Drive Board Series utilizes our
patented “drive board” process for producing perfectly compressed
uniform slabs. In this version, the “drive board” is a part of the
compression process. The board travels through the machine and serves as a
way of projecting massive slabs along that would otherwise stall from the
weight and drag of the clay. The drive board has several distinct
functional advantages over the dual roller drive.
Advantages of the
Drive Board Process
Architectural scale work can require long thick slabs. The DB process
keeps on projecting a massive thick slab out for the full length of the
board regardless of the thickness and the consistency of the clay.
The DRD system is more dependent on the
density of the clay to give structure so the slab can project on it’s
own. However, the slab can only push out so far before it would bunch up
from the shear mass of a thick heavy slab.
The DB is also bi-directional, allowing the
operator to run right-to-left or left-to-right. This has advantage for
applications where the artist wants to create embossing techniques or
application of different clays to the slab.
NOTE: When ordering an
electric roller, a table must be ordered.
