800 & Power Star I Pugmills
|
|
Both the Model 800 and the Power
Star I are mid-sized mills specifically designed for high output
reclaiming and wedging. Both units output 1200 lbs per hour of
consistently blended plastic clay for throwing, extruding or slab
building. Both units accept plywood dies for extruding some basic shapes.
(Consult factory for extruding guidelines). The Model 800 has the same
barrel and output capacity as the Power Star However, the Model 800 has a
slightly smaller motor and gear box. For this reason, the Model 800 is
intended for situations where only intermittent high output is required. We
recommend the Model 800 for usage of 4-6 tons per year. The Power Star
1 has the same output per hour as the Model 800, but a heavier gear box
and a higher HP motor. The Power Star is designed for a consistent
workout. We recommend the Power Star for usage of 6-12 tons per year.
Average output between 1000 and 1200 pounds per hour. 18” high x 24”
wide x 57” long. Hopper measures 7” x 7”. Shipping weight:
310 lbs. Limited one year warranty
|
Model 3000
Tile Extruder (not pictured)
Produces high quality extrusions for varied tile sizes. Based on a 6”
tile, output averages 100 sq. ft./ hr; approximately 200-350 linear
ft./hr. Extrudes most standard clay bodies at 18-25” moisture content.
Vacuum de-airing feature contributes to extrusion finish, green and fired
strength, glaze fit and warpage control. Extrusions may function for
stamped or molded tiles as well as other slab applications. Accessories
included with the 3000 Tile Extruder are a cutting table, paper roll
feeder, an extruding table, tile and pugging nozzles.
Model 3000 Heavy Duty
Vacuum Pugmill (not pictured)
This unit is the same as above, without the tables and tile
accessories. Output is 2000 lbs. per hour.

Facts
About Clay Pugmills
|
|
1.
The clay pugmill serves an invaluable purpose in the studio. It will save
countless hours of wedging time. By eliminating wedging, you will
eliminate the “hand strain” that wedging creates, and so avoid. the
perils of “carpal tunnel syndrome”. Many potters already have faced
this painful disorder, and wished that they had taken advantage of the
pugmill earlier.
2.
The “de-airing” style of pugmill comes with a vacuum pump connected to
a vacuum chamber on the barrel. The vacuum process eliminates the air in
the finished pug as well as increasing the plasticity of the clay Pugmills
without a vacuum pump only compress and blend the clay, but air pockets
will occur with enough frequency to require additional wedging.
|
3.
When choosing a pugmill, it is important to select a unit that is in
proportion to your yearly consumption of clay A unit that is too small
will slow down prep time and require maintenance. A unit that is too large
will not get used often enough to cycle the clay through the barrel,
requiring the entire barrel to be cleaned out on a regular basis. You want
to use a pugmill at least once a week to keep the clay moving
through the barrel. This will keep the clay within the barrel fresh and
consistent with what you are feeding through it.
4.
Pugmills should not be considered for “mixing” clay They are
not set up to do this adequately. Use a mixer for mixing, and a pugmill
for pugging! To efficiently process scrap, keep the scrap moist in an
airtight container and run it through the pugmill on a Bluebird Model 440.
