Amaco Velvet Underglaze -
Lead Free -
Cone 05
Amaco Low Fire
Glazes
Amaco Glazes currently in production are being labeled to indicate
their suitability for use on food and drink containers. See
information below on this subject or refer to the Ceramic Color
chart or the individual catalog glaze listings for special
information concerning lead and/or cadmium content and release.
Amaco
Liquid Glazes are supplied in non-breakable plastic
jars, and are prepared by homogenizing to the correct consistency
for easy brushing. Only stirring is necessary before application.
For spraying and dipping, glazes may be thinned with water.
Amaco
Dry Powder Glazes are packaged in sturdy plastic
jars suitable for storage after mixing. Since they already contain
the appropriate amount of gum and suspenders, only water need be
added. One pound yields approximately one pint. Sieving is
recommended.

Velvet
Underglazes - Lead Free
Amaco Glazes are very versatile, semi-translucent underglazes
which offer two finish possibilities. When left unglazed they
have the appearance of velour or velvet. They will assume a
soft, satin matte finish when glazed with Amaco Transparent Matt
Glaze and will intensify in color when covered with an Amaco
Clear Transparent Gloss glaze.
Velvets are very rich in color
and fire true. They may be used on greenware or bisque and
tolerate a wide firing range with recommended firing temperature
to that of the clay being used.
Note: When velvets are used
without a glaze cover they should not be used on surfaces which
come in contact with food or drink because they do not form a
glossy sealed surface on their own.
Helpful Hints
for Clear Glazing
Over Amaco Underglazes
For clear, covering glazes, Amaco LG-10, F-10, HF-9 and
HF-10 are recommended.
If the clear transparent
covering glaze is to be applied on the decorated bisque before the
underglaze colors are fired, dab the first coat with a sponge or
brush. Let dry and then brush on the next one or two coats. If the
glaze is to be applied by spraying, this precaution is not
necessary. When the underglaze colors are applied on greenware,
they are hardened on in the bisque firing and the covering glaze
may be applied either by brushing or spraying. Pieces are fired to
the maturing temperature of the covering glaze. Most of these
underglazes hold their color when fired up to cone 5. Some may be
fired up to cone 10 with good retention.
*
= Significant color change at Cone 5 and above.
+ = Stable at Cone 5; significant color change at Cone 10. NOTE: Those colors considered “stable” at high temperatures
may still be darker or lighter
than they are at low temperatures. Colors
were tested under a zinc-free clear glaze.
