Amaco Engobes
Amaco Low Fire Glazes
Amaco Glazes currently in production are being labeled to indicate their suitability for use on food and drink containers. See information below on this subject or refer to the Ceramic Color chart or the individual catalog glaze listings for special information concerning lead and/or cadmium content and release.

Amaco Liquid Glazes are supplied in non-breakable plastic jars, and are prepared by homogenizing to the correct consistency for easy brushing. Only stirring is necessary before application. For spraying and dipping, glazes may be thinned with water.

Amaco Dry Powder Glazes are packaged in sturdy plastic jars suitable for storage after mixing. Since they already contain the appropriate amount of gum and suspenders, only water need be added. One pound yields approximately one pint. Sieving is recommended.

LEAD AND/OR CADMIUM CONTENT AND RELEASE INFORMATION FOR ALL AMACO GLAZES:

(1) Contains no lead or cadmium bearing ingredients. Dinnerware Safe when fired to the recommended firing temperature.

(2) Contains some lead and/or cadmium compounds but passes test for lead and cadmium release. Dinnerware Safe when fired to the recommended firing temperature.

(3) Contains some lead and/or cadmium compounds and does not pass test for lead and cadmium release. Not recommended for surfaces, which come in contact with food or drink.

(4) Contains no lead or cadmium bearing ingredients but is not recommended for use on surfaces which come in contact with food or drink. Amaco Engobes
Engobes are either natural clays or a mixture of clays and other ceramic raw materials. They are typically rich earth colors or subdued tones. Engobes are applied to wet or dry greenware (not bisque) and fired to the maturing temperature of the clay being decorated. They do not create a sealed or glossy surface on their own, but may be covered with a clear glaze if so desired.

Methods of Decoration
Engobes are sometimes used to cover an inferior body, but generally are applied as decoration to contrast with the color of the clay piece. Slip painting, slip trailing

and sgraffito are especially good decorating methods for engobes. For best results when slip painting, use short strokes with a brush which is heavily loaded with the engobe. More elaborate thin-line designs can be achieved using a slip trailer. When the sgraffito process is used, designs are scratched into a layer of engobe so that the color of the clay shows through.

Most clays may be decorated with Amaco Engobes and fired to the maturing temperature of basic clay. Experimentation is advisable.
