The following descriptions are provided to help you choose the Tucker’s clay that best suits your needs. Please read the definitions below with respect to these clays:

Grog - Grog is ground fired clay, added to clay bodies to reduce shrinkage, minimize warpage, improve drying properties and increase wet strength. In general, grog is labeled by the largest size particle it contains with no limit on how fine they may become. (A “30-mesh grog” may vary dramatically containing particles as fine as 100 or 200-mesh and differing percentages of actual 30-mesh particles.) Tucker’s uses a controlled (30x80)-mesh Grog in all its production clay bodies. This means that the particle sizes are limited so that there are none larger than 30-mesh and none finer than 80-mesh. Controlled grog content helps insure consistent working properties from batch to batch.

Kyanite - This is a low-thermal-expansion material used in clay bodies to aid drying, minimize warpage, and improve thermal shock resistance. Tuckers uses a fine 100-mesh kyanite in some of its clays to get these benefits when additional grog would inhibit the workability or detract from the surface quality of the body.

Silica Sand - A coarse form of silica used in clay bodies to improve drying properties and minimize warpage when a smooth, clean, light- colored surface is desired. Used in porcelains and smooth, “porcelaineous” stonewares to improve workability while maintaining whiteness.

Thompson Raku Up To C/6
This clay is designed primarily for Raku but can be fired as high as Cone 6. It is quite plastic but contains 20% (30x80)-mesh grog for excellent building and drying properties as well as warpage and thermal shock resistance. It fires to a light buff color @ Raku temperatures. For sculptural applications, the high grog content also increases wet strength and permits thick cross-sections for large-scale work. It is a pleasant, warm light-tan when fired to Cone 6.
