Japanese Wood-Fired Ceramics
‘Take a wood-fired piece in your hands. Can you follow the passage of
the flame as it turns
the clay a glowing red? Can you see where the river of fire eddied
and deposited ash, which then melted into a spray of golden…spots?‘ Japanese Wood-Fired
Ceramics details
the materials and methods of this nearly
1000-year old tradition. Over 700 illustrations and color photos detail the techniques that have been
passed from master to apprentice and offer stunning
examples of works created over the years. Topics covered include: ‘the
complexities of loading and firing a wood kiln, unique glazes and firing techniques used to obtain
surface effects, and experimental approaches…’ Also
included are instructions for building 2 kilns including Olsen’s “Dancing
Fire Wood Kiln”. An
excellent choice for anyone interested in this fascinating technique.

Alternative
Kilns & Firing Techniques
Ceramicists searching for new ways to fire their creations now have a
wealth of options. Authors James Watkins and Paul Wandless, along with a
group of distinguished artisans, demonstrate in detail how to build
low-cost, low-tech, yet high-quality kilns. The plans range from an easy,
affordable, and versatile Raku kiln to a unique wood-fueled Downdraft
Stovepipe Barrel one, These clever devices make it possible to produce
rich surface effects from alternative reduction firing techniques. In
addition to showing the basic procedures for using each kiln,
easy-to-follow directions for many fast-fire methods unfold in color
photographs: you’ll see how to achieve terra sigillata surfaces with
direct chemical application, and how to do traditional crackle-glaze raku
and smoke finishes.(128 pages, 8 ½” x 11”) by James C. Watkins &
Paul Andrew Wandless.

Soda,
Clay and Fire
“The reason this book is more than a technical bible for soda firing is
that the result of Gail Nichols’ efforts are glorious. The organic forms
are just waiting to be covered and integrated with the surface, the effect
of loading and soda firing. The artistry stands on its own merit
and, fortunately, is the product of the processes she has so diligently
developed. There have, of course, been books of value written on the
subject of soda firing, but this book gives a comprehensive, detailed and
artistic approach to the art of soda firing.” (200 pages, 9” x
6” x 1/4”, Soft cover, 100+ color/b&w images) (Gail Nichols)

Stoneware
Stoneware is a hard, strong, and vitrified ware, usually fired above 2192
Degrees F, which allows the body and glaze to mature at the same time and
form an integrated layer. During firing, the organic matter found in clay
is burned away, the color changes, and a layer of glass is fused to the
surface. The quality of the glaze owes much to the establishment of this
layer, and it is therefore the glaze quality that determines a ware's
acceptance as stoneware. Such firing can achieve qualities and finishes
that appeal to many potters; however, firing clay at such high
temperatures imposes demands on the clay and glazes and kilns.
In Stoneware, Richard Dewar discusses the
various considerations that need to be taken into accounts when working at
higher temperatures and shows a myriad of techniques and glazes that can
be used to achieve excellent results. Including the work of Sandy Brown,
Will Levi Marshall, Robin Welch, John Calver, and other internationally
known artists, this handbook is only one available on this increasingly
popular subject. (9" X 6" X 3/8" Softcover) (128 Pages with
over 200 color photos, by Richard Dewar)

of individual potters who have sought to reconnect with basic technology
in out hi-tech society and who want to explore and master all the possible
variables that this technique provides for the creative process. This book
describes some of the technical, safety, and physical challenges of wood
firing through first-hand accounts and interviews with potters. These are
their personal stories, and in telling them, they share their lessons
learned and their technical knowledge. (8.5" X 11" X 3/8"

Celebrating the Cycle - The Wood Fired Pottery of Matt Jones
This inspirational video is exquisitely produced and directed. Covering
the entire process of creating wood-fired pottery Matt Jones takes viewers
on a visual and intellectual tour of his techniques and processes. From
digging clay and mixing and preparing the materials to cutting and
preparing the wood, the viewers are reminded of the attention to detail
that must be kept at each critical step. Matt Jones takes viewers through
glazing and finishing, and even how he makes his really big pots. He
presents a visual description of his wood kiln and the various chambers
and why he loads different pieces in each area for maximum effect. Viewers
will be struck by the precision stoking of wood and the careful monitoring
of the cones and the pyrometer as he slowly brings the kiln to temperature
before the final salting of the kiln. After the kiln is cooled, we watch
Matt Jones as he unloads, cleans and displays his finished pots.
If you are a potter and you are the least
bit interested in wood fired pottery, or you are a collector or teacher,
this is a quintessential video to have in your collection.
