Glazes Cone 6 - 1240° C / 2264° F
Traditionally potters fire their work to either low temperatures, as in earthenware, or to high temperatures which stoneware requires. However, a growing number of potters, particularly those who use electric kilns, are firing to a middle range of temperatures, of which cone 6 is typical. Using middle-range temperatures saves fuel and expense, reduces wear on electric elements and yet allows the potter to achieve features shared by earthenware and stoneware. Michael Bailey surveys this growing trend in middle temperature firing and guides the reader with practical information. He discusses a range of different glazes, including special effects, glaze stains, and underglaze colors, giving recipes and tips to ensure success. The information is illustrated with many colorful glaze tests (all fired in electric kilns) to show the variety and scope of glazes at Cone 6. (9-1/4" X 6" X 3/8" Softcover) Michael Bailey (128 Pages with over 250 color photos and illustrations)

Macro Crystalline Glazes - The Challenge of Crystals
Macro- crystalline glazes present one of the more difficult challenges a potter can face. These spectacular and beautiful glazes have fascinated potters and collectors ever since they first appeared in Europe in the 1850s. Modern studio potters are at the forefront of a crystalline renaissance founded on the achievements of the great European and American factories of more than a century ago. The advent of the electronically programmed kiln has brought easier access to crystalline glazes. Many potters are using new technology to produce outstanding specimens. Nevertheless, the process still makes great demands on the skill and patience of the potter, for whom this book provides exhaustive insights into the second golden age of macro-crystalline glazes. The author reveals his own research and techniques at length and in great practical detail. Thirteen other potters tell how they too have met the challenge of crystals - one has even photographed them forming inside the kiln. With informative text and more than 150 pictures of crystal pots old and new, this book aims to instruct and excite experienced makers, as well as potters who are preparing to face the crystal challenge for the first time. It is also a valuable reference book for collectors and all who admire the dramatic beauty of crystals. (11 ¼” X 9” X ½”) (144 Pages Hardcover) Peter Ilsley

Soda Glazing
Because it produces the popular “orange-peel” texture commonly associated with salt-glazed ware, but without the sodium chloride vapor, Soda Glazing is fast becoming a popular firing technique. In addition to its more “environmentally friendly” aspect, Soda Glazing also produces more subtle colors than traditional Salt Glazing. Ruthanne Tudball begins with the history of traditional salt glazes and discusses the similarities and differences in today’s soda glazes. She also details kiln-building, recipes, application and firing techniques. (96 Pages/ 70 B&W & 20 Color Illus/ 6”x 9”/ Paperback) (Ruthanne Tudball)
