Knives Saws & Rasps

Thin-bladed knives come in either hard or soft temper. The hard ones are inflexible, while the soft fettling knives are flexible and can be bent into desired angles and curves. They were first developed to remove the fettle (the ridge of material left where pieces of the mold join when a piece has been cast). They are also very useful for trimming slabs and thrown pots. Saws have many uses in a ceramic studio, they can be used for cutting and enlarging holes in pots as well as carving. Rasps or shredding tools are used to plane down and fine tune forms on large surfaces of clay.
